Jewish humor was a staple of American life, but he and the Israelis were impressed that the Palestinians more than held their own. The same subordinates who quaked before Arafat’s fateful decisions also teased him to and about his face. One day, they kept saying, Arafat came into the presence of Allah, who pronounced judgment with a grant of one wish. Arafat beamed. Allah is great, he said. He had dreamed of this moment. Reaching into his military tunic, Arafat pulled out the tattered map of Palestine before the Six Day War in 1967, and submitted a wish for peace in it shape. Allah frowned in reply that some things are too difficult even for the Almighty. Arafat was crushed.
